2021 Summer Holidays - Out of Office Poem
Andrew Treloar,
Work goes ever ever on
With apologies to J. R. R. Tolkien and his song from The Hobbit, Roads go ever ever on
Work goes ever ever on,
By email, calendar entry,
In darkened rooms unlit by sun
On Zoom calls lasting endlessly.
In the frozen COVID pause,
Work from home no longer thrills,
Trapped in lockdown's changing laws,
Just keeping going is a skill.
Work goes ever ever on
Sometimes slow and sometimes fast
Yet thoughts that inward have become
Turn to holidays at last.
Eyes long focussed on a screen
And folders of unending files
Turn at last to vistas green;
I'll close the laptop, for a while.
